Most human beings are not very keen to know themselves in order to improve. Lucidity does not interest them; they prefer to deceive themselves and cling to their illusions. They have already formed such a high opinion of themselves that even their spiritual master sometimes prefers not to tell them the truth, for he knows what their reaction will be in advance.
