The United Kingdom has confirmed what everybody who ugly cried during “My Octopus Teacher” already knew: Octopuses are sentient — capable, that is, of perceiving things like pain and pleasure.

The country is adding an amendment to its Animal Welfare Sentience Bill to recognize creatures such as octopus, crabs, squids, and lobsters along with “all other decapod crustaceans and cephalopod molluscs” as sentient creatures, according to a press release from the UK Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs. The bill aims to ensure animal sentience is taken into account when developing government policy, and as such could inform debates around animal rights and dietary choices.

“The science is now clear that decapods and cephalopods can feel pain and therefore it is only right they are covered by this vital piece of legislation,” Animal Welfare Minister Lord Zac Goldsmith said in the release.

The update came after an extensive report from the London School of Economics and Political Science that found that these creatures are capable of feeling “pain, pleasure, hunger, thirst, warmth, joy, comfort and excitement.”

“[Our] view is that the time has come to include cephalopod molluscs and decapod crustaceans in UK animal welfare law in an explicit way,” the report read, “and to take proportionate steps to regulate practices that are a source of reasonable and widespread animal welfare concerns.”

It’s worth noting that the release stressed that no existing marine industry operations and practices will be impacted by the law, as it only influences future government decisions. However, it’s still good to see that a major world government is taking concrete steps to finally recognize the sentience of the critters — and how they might not appreciate, you know, being boiled alive for their delicious meat.

Verticale ruimte voor de rivier bewaren 19 nov 2021, Vroege Vogels Als het aan het Wereldnatuurfonds ligt wordt er veel minder gekapt en gemaaid in de uiterwaarden. Ooibossen van wilgen, essen en zeldzame zwarte populieren krijgen zo meer kans om te groeien. Dat betekent meer CO2 opslag, maar trekt ook planten- en vogelsoorten aan, en dat is goed voor de biodiversiteit. Kappen en maaien 'Verticale ruimte voor de rivier' is een plan van het WNF om minder te maaien en te kappen in uiterwaarden. Zo krijgt de natuur meer kans zich te ontwikkelen en zonder dat de veiligheid in het geding is. Veel bomen en struiken worden nu vooral gekapt omdat ze opstuwing van doorstromend water veroorzaken. Bij hoog water moet het rivierwater zo snel mogelijk afgevoerd worden naar zee en worden bossen en andere opgaande begroeiing gezien als veiligheidsrisico. Maar uit onderzoek van WWF, Flows en Stroming, uitgevoerd door HKV, blijkt dat het mogelijk is om duizenden hectaren rivierbos natuurlijk te laten ontwikkelen door meer ruimte te creëren in dijkversterkingsprojecten, bijvoorbeeld door dijken meer landinwaarts te plaatsen.. Ruimte voor de rivier De komende 30 jaar gaat 600 kilometer rivierdijk op de schop in het Hoogwaterbeschermingsprogramma. Door bepaalde rivierdijken net wat sterker te maken, ontstaat ruimte voor ooibossen. Het onderzoek laat zien dat dit kan tegen lage meerkosten (gemiddeld 2% meerkosten voor 10 cm opstuwing). Deze ‘verticale ruimte voor de rivier’ is een nieuwe bouwsteen naast het ruimschoots bewezen Ruimte voor de rivier, waarbij door dijkterugleggingen en het aanleggen van nevengeulen de waterveiligheid wordt vergroot. Waterdebat Bij het (Jaarlijkse) Waterdebat in Den Haag a.s. maandag dienen D66 en GroenLinks een motie in waarbij om meer aandacht voor de natuur wordt gevraagd in het rivierenbeleid. Tjeerd de Groot van D66 vindt het plan van het Wereldnatuurfonds mooi en heel bruikbaar hiervoor.

Desinformatie staat centraal in rapport over toekomst journalistiek

Desinformatie en vertrouwen in het nieuws zijn prominente onderwerpen in een onderzoek over de toekomst van de journalistiek. In de scenariostudie Journalistiek 2035 schetst Van de Bunt Adviseurs, in opdracht van het Stimuleringsfonds voor de Journalistiek, vier toekomstbeelden van de Nederlandse samenleving in 2035. Meer dan 60 experts, opleiders van journalisten en andere betrokkenen droegen in online sessies ideeën aan waaruit de samenstellers trends destilleerden. Bovenaan het lijstje ‘impactvolle en zekere trends’ staat: ‘Mis- en desinformatiecampagnes nemen in aantal, ernst en omvang toe.’  Als belangrijkste onzekere factoren voor de toekomst noemen de auteurs de vraag hoe techbedrijven worden gereguleerd en in hoeverre burgers elkaar blijven vertrouwen. Ze voorzien vier mogelijke scenario’s. Extremes: In het zwartste toekomstscenario leven we in een wereld waarin burgers elkaar wantrouwen en big tech niet effectief wordt gereguleerd. Mis- en desinformatie wakkeren de polarisatie aan en gevestigde media delven het onderspit. Bubbles: In dit scenario worden big tech en data gereguleerd. Burgers leven online en offline in bubbles van gelijkgestemden: de overheid bewaakt de orde, maar de samenleving is gefragmenteerd. Nieuwsmedia bedienen vooral hun eigen bubbel en mainstream media bestaan alleen dankzij subsidie. Money: Het medialandschap is in handen van een paar commerciële bedrijven. Big tech beheerst het publieke debat, een invloed die alleen wordt ingeperkt door zelfregulering. Factcheckers helpen het publieke debat te voorzien van feiten. Het gaat goed met de economie, het vertrouwen tussen burgers is hoog. Careful: Met de macht van techbedrijven, die stevig gereguleerd worden, is ook het probleem van mis- en desinformatie teruggedrongen. Trollen is verleden tijd: online anonimiteit bestaat niet meer. Burgers vertrouwen elkaar en vertrouwen kwaliteitsjournalistiek, die financiële steun krijgt van de overheid. De interactieve, futuristische website van Journalistiek 2035 is zeker een bezoekje waard. De scenario’s bevatten science-fictionelementen: zo volgt de lezer in Extremes een journalist onderweg naar een interview met de beruchte complotdenker GertJan van der Velde. Voordat hij daar arriveert, verzeilt hij in een situatie die laat zien hoe erg de samenleving gepolariseerd is, waardoor het interview ineens heel anders verloopt. Het scenario leest als een hoofdstuk van een (dystopische) roman, waaruit blijkt dat het zinloos is om de ander te overtuigen van feiten.
