Schrijfster JK Rowling putte niet volledig uit eigen fantasie. In deel twee van de bekende boekenreeks moeten Harry en zijn vriendjes de alruin verpotten, wat tot een heel stel krijsende alruinwortels leidt. In 16e eeuwse kruidboeken werd al geschreven over deze plant. Deze zijn sinds kort in langdurige bruikleen van Naturalis. Hier zijn ze niet alleen beter beschermd tegen diefstal, maar ze kunnen hier ook beter worden bestudeerd. Botanisch filosoof Norbert Peeters en botanica Isabela Pombo Geertsma leggen het uit.

Fuch en Bock

De kruidboeken die zijn overgekomen zijn geschreven in de 16e eeuw door Fuchs en Bock, volgens Peeters de "geestelijk vader van de moderne botanie". Zij hadden als doel om kennis over de geneeskrachtige werking van de Europese planten te bundelen. Bij de tekeningen, die door een houtsnijder in het boek zijn gedrukt en later zijn ingekleurd, staat in gotisch schrift allerlei informatie over de geneeskrachtige werking van de plant.

Alruin

Een voorbeeld is de alruin. De wortels van deze plant worden vaak getekend als een klein mensje, en deze plant zou dan ook de mens in zijn geheel gezonder maken: de geest dus. Deze plant komt terug bij zowel Fuch als Bock. Deze plant werd verkocht tegen psychische problemen en was best wel kostbaar. Daarom verzonnen sommige handelaren een listig trucje. Ze kerfden een mensenlichaam uit de wortel van de goedkopere heggenrank en lieten hem vervolgens nog een aantal dagen in de pot staan zodat hij weer wat wortelhaartjes kreeg. Ze verkochten de plant met harig wortelfiguurtje vervolgens met winst als alruin.

Hekserij

De boeken leveren hopelijk nieuwe informatie op. Niet alleen over hoe men in de 16e eeuw over planten dacht, maar ook over hekserij. Botanici nemen nu aan dat giftige planten werden gebruikt door 'heksen', voornamelijk vrouwen die veel wisten van de geneeskrachtige werking van kruiden. Pombo Geertsema: "Nu wordt vooral de nachtschadefamilie in verband gebracht met hekserij, maar waarom? Er zijn wel meer giftige planten. Dus waarom deze?". Wellicht bieden de boeken van Fuch en Bock uitkomst.
