« Whether regarding events or human behaviour, it is very difficult to separate good from evil, for they are inextricably intertwined: this is a fact we are faced with each and every day.
In the Emerald Tablet, Hermes Trismegistus said, ’You shall separate the subtle from the gross, gently with great industry’, that is to say, with great care. This precept of alchemy applies quite naturally to the question of good (the subtle) and evil (the gross). If it is so difficult to separate them, it is because they feed on each other. Evil clings to good to draw strength from it. Good also clings to evil to feed on it. Although we can allow good to feed on evil because it transforms it, we must prevent evil from feeding on good. A plant is allowed to draw elements from the earth in which it grows, and in so doing it respects the laws of creation and of life; but the soil does not have the right to draw forces from the plant. »
